“The madcap alternative circus … is as talented, funny and, yes, snarky (in the nicest possible way) as one could wish.” —San Francisco Chronicle
With a spring-loaded love of the absurd, the internationally heralded troupe Circus Oz has created a fabulous new future From the Ground Up. Join this wildly popular company in a glorious rebellion against the generic as they deliver a delightfully ridiculous show for all ages. This versatile and diverse home-grown mob of quick-witted stunt jumpers are fully charged and raring to go with power-packed aerialists, knockabout jugglers and live-wire musicians all acrobatically suspended in disbelief under the big top of Royce Hall.
Circus Oz is an irreverent, beautiful, spectacular, larrikin (look it up, mate!) Australian circus credited with revitalizing a traditional theatrical art form in a uniquely Australian way. Circus Oz is a rock ‘n’ roll, animal-free circus that has influenced the development of circus arts around the world since its foundation in 1978. Circus Oz has toured to more than 100 cities in 26 countries, bringing its signature humor and authentic style to more than 3 million people. The ensemble’s origins and aesthetic are rooted in the Australian theater style of the late 1960s and early 1970s, which included the development of an Australian artistic voice, ensemble playing and group creation, heightened and exuberant physicality, an interest in contemporary trends, breaking down the barriers between spectator and performer, an exploration of comedy populism, overt political stands and a strong focus on the performer. These overarching principles have continued to inform the group’s work over the decades since its inception.
Join us as Circus Oz hits Los Angeles for the first time since its appearance in the 1984 Olympics Opening ceremonies, for a not-to-be missed performance spectacle that will light up Royce Hall with vibrant characters and ribald theatrical artistry all emanating From the Ground Up.
