"Glass's Etudes waxed delicate and grandiose, sultry and melancholy, ghostly and hard-edged." - The New York Times

Join us for a remarkable concert of solo piano work performed by one of the most influential American composers of the late-20th century as Philip Glass unveils his recently completed Etudes, more than 20 years in the making. Along with Glass, two stunning guest pianists will perform selections of the etudes for the eveningís programóMaki Namekawa and Sally Whitwell.

Glass originally conceived the etudes as a set of 20 works for solo piano, a compositional undertaking that would allow him to expand his own technique and push the boundaries of piano tone and style.†

Throughout the 1990s, he completed 16 of the etudes, each of which take a unique approach to the instrument. The final four etudes were commissioned in celebration of Glassís 75th birthday.†

An introspective portrait of the composer over two decades, The Etudes is an immersive journey into one composerís personal soundscape as expressed in the depth and breadth of a single instrument.†
