Hip hop dance phenoms Jon Boogz and Lil Buck first performed together as street dancers on the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica. Boogz – whose background is in popping – and Buck – an expert in Memphis jookin’ – met at an open jam session in LA about 10 years ago. Over the years, their careers have exploded to include collaborations with Madonna (Buck) and Naomi Campbell (Boogz), an Apple AirPods campaign (Buck), an Adidas project in collaboration with Pharrell (Boogz), then as a duo, a VR film directed by Terrence Malick, and an appearance at TED Conference in Vancouver. Buck and Boogz share a concern for larger social issues like mass incarceration, immigration and the destruction of the environment, which they hope to bring to attention of global audiences through the vehicle of dance.
Their most recent collaboration, Love Heals All Wounds, is an evening-length work that addresses these issues, promoting diversity, inclusion and empathy as a uniting force. Their company, MAI (Movement Art Is), uses movement artistry to inspire and change the world while elevating the artistic educational and social impact of dance to reset the spectrum that defines dance in America.
MOVEMENT The party of the year is back! MOVEMENT is CAP UCLA's annual post-show event that brings art enthusiasts together to celebrate the artists and performances that inspire us. This year, join us for a celebration on the Royce Hall Terrace after the performance for appetizers and drinks, music by KCRW DJ Mathieu Schryer and performances by LA street dancers. MOVEMENT is free with a ticket to the performance.
Love Heals All Wounds was made possible by The Quiet Fund and the New England Foundation for the Arts' National Dance Project, with lead funding from the Doris Duke Charitable Foundation and The Andrew W. Mellon Foundation. Love Heals All Wounds was workshopped at Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center for the Performing Arts in Northridge, CA, and produced by Sozo Artists Inc. in partnership with Sozo Impact Fund and its fiscal sponsors Silicon Valley Community Foundation and WACO Theater Center.
