Leading up to the Los Angeles premiere of Basetrack Live, we present Peace & Quiet, a temporary dialogue station where veterans and civilians—two groups whose paths increasingly do not cross—can engage in conversation, meet, share stories, leave a note, or just shake hands. Conceptualized and designed by Sandra Wheeler and Alfred Zollinger, co-directors of Matter Architecture Practice.

The station will reside on the UCLA Royce/Powell Quad from October 6¬10, 2014.

It will be open 10 a.m.-2 p.m. Mon-Thu; Fri 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.-10 p.m

The Quad, one of UCLA's great public intersections provides an ideal physical space to initiate and inform an exchange of ideas and creativity, while offering a focused hub to highlight the many programs and services UCLA offers the military and veteran community.

Activities include:

  • an interactive Conversation Wall, where participants can respond to a daily prompt
  • a children’s book drive in conjunction with Blue Star Families
  • Stories of Service: a recording/listening station where members of the community can record their personal stories
  • a Veteran’s Services Inquiry Desk
  • letter-writing activities in collaboration with Operation Gratitude and an interactive exhibit on the history of correspondence from the front
  • informal conversations hosted by UCLA veterans and service providers

Join the Veteran/Civilian conversation on CAP UCLA’s website, by responding to the question, How Do You Serve?

Peace & Quiet is part of the UCLA Chancellor¹s Veterans Initiative, and stems from a collaboration with the UCLA Veterans Resource Center, UCLA Communications & Public Outreach, and Matter Architecture Practice
