“[Spiegelman…] elevated pulp mass medium to high art and proved that comics didn’t have to be comic.”
—The Guardian

Twenty-two years after the release of his Pulitzer Prize-winning graphic novel MAUS, Art Spiegelman presents Wordless!, an innovative hybrid of slides, talk and musical performance created with acclaimed jazz composer Phillip Johnston. Johnston’s original scores, performed with his sextet, accompany the cartoonist’s personal tour of the first legitimate “graphic novels”—silent picture stories made by early 20th-century masters like Frans Masereel, Lynd Ward and Milt Gross—and their influence on him.

Both Art and Phillip participated in our Artists Bookshelf initiative, responding to questions about books that have impacted them. Check out Phillip's responses on the Artists Bookshelf homepage. Art's book-related treatise lives on the blog

We'll have a selected amount of the books they mention on hand the night of the performance in our Royce Reads mini library in the Royce Hall West Lobby.

WORDLESS! was originally commissioned by The Sydney Opera House for GRAPHIC.
