“To hear composers take my work and take it seriously... it’s a thrill.” —Stephen Sondheim
Celebrated pianist and genre-busting new music champion Anthony de Mare pays tribute to the musical genius of Stephen Sondheim with ten new commissions of Sondheim songs, re-imagined for piano by some of today’s leading composers in jazz, film, theater and classical music including Timo Andres, Jon Batiste, Ted Hearne, Meredith Monk, Jeff Beal and others. Building on his acclaimed Liaisons project, a remarkable compendium that featured 36 Sondheim works re- imagined by the likes of Steve Reich, Nico Muhly, Fred Hersch, Mason Bates, Thomas Newman, Wynton Marsalis, Eve Beglarian and Jason Robert Brown, Liaisons 2020 was commissioned in honor of the Maestro’s 90th birthday. Both concerts will feature works from both collections in this West Coast premiere of the Liaisons 2020 project. Grammy-winning pianist Gloria Cheng joins de Mare performing Steve Reich’s Finishing the Hat - Two Pianos and the world premiere of Conrad Tao’s two-piano version of Move On.
NOTE: Your ticket includes admission to both Parts I & 2. There will be a 2-hour dinner break from 5 pm–7 pm. You may choose to order a bite off-campus, order the $15 buffet dinner option as an add-on with your ticket order or purchase snacks from the concessions stand. The run time, including both parts and the dinner break, is approximately 6 hours (3 pm–9 pm).

The new works by Ted Hearne and Timo Andres were commissioned by CAP UCLA.
