“Centroamérica” comes to Los Angeles

CAP UCLA is proud to open the 2025-26 season with a very special project by Mexican theater collective Lagartijas Tiradas al Sol Saturday, September 27 at The Nimoy! Transforming lived experience into art, Centroamérica blurs the line between fact and fiction. Known for their daring approach to theater, the company creates works that confront official narratives and reframe how we understand truth, memory and history.

Centroamérica follows the story of a Nicaraguan woman fleeing Daniel Ortega’s dictatorship, weaving personal testimony into a larger exploration of the region’s political and cultural complexities. Performed in Spanish with English supertitles, this powerful work invites audiences into an intimate act of storytelling that is both urgent and universal.

The company extends its vision beyond the stage with Centroamérica, a companion publication that deepens the project’s exploration of the region. Drawing on travel, testimony and research, the collective examines migration, borders, empire and identity, positioning Central America as both a mirror of resilience and a site of ongoing struggle. Together, the play and book challenge the boundary between art and life, urging us to reconsider how personal and political stories are told and remembered.

Arrive early and browse text and video resources in our lobby that helped to inspire the company in their creation process and dives deeper into the themes of the production. Stay after the performance for a brief discussion and meet and greet with the artists presented in collaboration with UCLA Centre for Performance Studies and UCLA Center for Mexican Studies
