Dan Froot uses shoes to create foley noises on stage live

Every sound tells a story

Dan Froot & Company invites audiences into an intimate, live radio-theater experience that captures the heart of storytelling through sound. Arms Around America offers a rare window into American lives, with stories drawn from real families in South Florida, Montana, and Southern California whose lives have been shaped by guns. This world premiere uses oral histories to bring personal narratives to life — but at its core, it’s an exploration of the art of storytelling itself, unfolding through the magic of sound and performance.

What makes Arms Around America exceptional is the meticulous foley artistry that transforms ordinary objects into evocative storytelling tools. In real time, sound artist Dan Froot crafts every creak, footstep, or distant gunshot — heightening each moment’s tension and emotion. The performance becomes a sensory journey, where sounds tell stories as much as the words spoken on stage. With four actors voicing dozens of characters, every detail — whether the flick of a match or the scrape of a chair — adds depth and nuance, pulling audiences deeper into the narrative.

Accompanying the foley work is a live band performing Julio Montero’s dynamic score, weaving music into the soundscape to amplify the emotional currents beneath each scene.
