Forward-thinking beats
Gary, Indiana’s own Jlin (Jerrilynn Patton) is reshaping the possibilities of electronic music. With compositions that pulse between rhythm and emotion, she’s been hailed by Pitchfork as “one of the most forward-thinking contemporary composers in any genre.” Drawing on percussive elements, Jlin often uses synthesizers, drum machines and field recordings — but her most notable contributions lie in how she reimagines and manipulates these sounds to create entirely new textures. Her soundscapes are thrilling, multidimensional and deeply human — music that seems to breathe, move and transform in real time.
A recipient of a 2023 US Artist Award and a Pulitzer Prize nomination, Jlin has collaborated with visionary heavy hitting artists including Philip Glass, Björk, Third Coast Percussion, Kronos Quartet, choreographers Wayne McGregor and Kyle Abraham and fashion designer Rick Owens. It’s a remarkable journey from her early days working at a steel mill while composing and self-releasing her acclaimed 2015 debut album, Dark Energy.

Jlin and The Industry’s Artistic & Executive Director Tim Griffin will share an immersive conversation and listening experience, tracing her inspirations from Igor Stravinsky to Luther Vandross and beyond while reimagining how sound, storytelling and experimentation converge on today’s post-genre stage.
