Winter Wonders: Upcoming CAP UCLA Events
Whether you’re looking to get lost in cosmic melodies or dive into the stories of distant lands, these winter performances promise moments of wonder. Here’s what you can look forward to this season:
Faustin Linyekula: My Body, My Archive
Saturday, January 18, 2025 at 8 pm
Freud Playhouse
Winter is often a time to gather with friends and family to celebrate and create memories. In My Body, My Archive, Congolese dancer and choreographer Faustin Linyekula explores his own familial history and memories within the context of the Congo’s complex past. Through intricate and emotional choreography, this performance becomes a living archive — a reflection on the resilience of the human spirit and a love letter to the women in Linyekula’s familial clan.
H. Sinno: Poems of Consumption
Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 8 pm
The Nimoy
H. Sinno’s Poems of Consumption is a song cycle that mirrors the season’s contemplative spirit. Partially inspired by British philosopher Mark Fisher’s book Capitalist Realism, this work juxtaposes the textures of consumerism — crumpling cellophane, bubble wrap, unboxing sounds — with the warmth of a romantic string quartet.
Poems of Consumption features compositions by H. Sinno and Andy Butler, poetry by H. Sinno and Jimin Seo, and string arrangements by Paul Stroud. This dynamic performance invites audiences to reflect on the rhythms of modern life amid winter’s pause. If you’re fed up with the hustle and bustle of the holiday season, this show is for you.
Ant Hampton / Time Based Editions: Borderline Visible —
Collective Experience
Saturday, February 8, 2025 at 8 pm
The Nimoy
As winter envelops us in its quiet introspection, this 77-minute audio-visual performance created by multimedia artist Ant Hampton mirrors the season's reflective energy. Brought to life through soundscape and narration, this unique theatrical experience transforms Borderline Visible (a photobook created by Hampton) into a sensory journey traversing Lausanne, Switzerland, and Izmir, Turkey. This work is part of the ongoing series Time-Based Editions.
Each ticket includes a copy of the book Borderline Visible.
JJJJJerome Ellis: Aster of Ceremonies
Saturday, February 22, 2025 at 8 pm
The Nimoy
Rounding out our winter performance series is a live music event celebrating Aster of Ceremonies, the latest album from JJJJJerome Ellis. And no, that’s not a typo — Ellis’ work boldly embraces his own stutter and leans into themes surrounding disabled speech. His debut album The Clearing was hailed as “an astonishing, must-listen project” by The Guardian, and Aster of Ceremonies promises the same wow-factor and musical genius.
