Crushing Wheelchairs, a film about homelessness featuring currently and formerly unhoused cast members from POOR Magazine.
“An honest, unvarnished look at a worthy population that so many want to ignore or hide from. A montage of real stories…unmasked, unfiltered, and always compelling.” — Devorah Major, San Francisco’s third Poet Laureate
Crushing Wheelchairs is a feature film that follows a group of poor people living in a homeless community as they struggle to find hope amid gentrification, domestic violence and the growing brutality of the forces that surround them.
The film features a cast of both currently and formerly unhoused residents who are members of POOR Magazine, an Oakland arts and activism collective.
Inspired by the actors’ real life stories, Crushing Wheelchairs incorporates elements of magical realism, poetry and folklore to examine the causes and harsh realities of homelessness, told directly by the people who struggle against it everyday.
