Based in Taiwan, Cloud Gate takes its name from a movement ritual dating back thousands of years, believed to be China’s oldest dance. In 1973, choreographer Lin Hwai-min adopted this name when founding the first contemporary dance company in the Chinese-speaking world.

Drawing on classical, folk, and modern dance traditions from both Western and Asian cultures, Cloud Gate engages closely with history, society, and lived experience. Cloud Gate dancers train in meditation, Qi Gong breathing exercises,martial arts, modern dance and ballet, recently expanding into other dance styles and new inspiration. They have been called “Asia’s leading contemporary dance theater” (The Times), and “One of the best dance companies in the world” (FAZ). 

After more than 50 years, Cloud Gate continues to transform ancient aesthetics into a thrilling and modern celebration of motion.

Like all DFS programs, this hour-long student matinee performance is free to any Los Angeles area public school, though we do ask that schools make their own transportation arrangements.  If that means you might not be able to attend, let us know.  We may be able to help.  Our Perloff Memorial Bus Fund provides support for bus transportation.
