“One of the great musicians of his generation... Iyer resolves the contradictions of the world in beauty.” - Der Spiegel (Germany)
Grammy Award-winning violinist Jennifer Koh is celebrated for her commanding performances and dedication to both traditional and contemporary repertoire. Vijay Iyer has carved out a unique path as an influential, prolific composer and pianist. Iyer has created a consistently innovative, emotionally resonant body of work over the last three decades, earning him a place as one of the leading music-makers of his generation.
Koh and Iyer present a new musical work about loss, healing and celebration. Scenes of Living and Dying explores the human relationship to the thresholds of life: births, deaths, transformations and awakenings. The music takes the form of a collection of sonic scenes, ceremonies, and conjurings, ranging from tender to severe, fragile to robust, melancholy to celebratory, in an offering of communion across life’s existential divide.
Like all DFS programs, this hour-long student matinee performance is free to any Los Angeles area public school, though we do ask that schools make their own transportation arrangements. If that means you might not be able to attend, let us know. We may be able to help. Our Perloff Memorial Bus Fund provides support for bus transportation.
We often have more demand than we can accommodate; requests are filled on a first-come basis. Contact us at dfs@cap.ucla.edu for more information.
