Caleb Teicher and Nic Gareiss blend tap, swing, clogging and Irish step dance in Ear to the Ground.

“A virtuoso step dancer in Irish and Appalachian traditions...an undersung treasure.” — Brian Seibert on Nic Gareiss, The New York Times

“One of the brightest lights in tap today.” — The New Yorker on Caleb Teicher

Two-time Bessie Award winner Caleb Teicher joins forces with Nic Gareiss for Ear to the Ground, an evening-length duo collaboration that finds the two performers intermingling tap, swing, Appalachian clogging and Irish step dance.

Teicher and Gareiss unite improvisational innovation with tradition, staging a singular, genre-defying encounter of percussive movement. Gareiss, who The Boston Herald described as “the most inventive and expressive step dancer on the scene,” brings movement informed by 30 years of ethnographic study and performance, while Teicher brings their widely lauded approach to modern interdisciplinary collaboration. The result is an intimate, transportive performance grounded at the crossroads of jazz and folk, social and solo dance.

Caleb Teicher and Nic Gareiss will also present a free matinee performance for public school groups through Design for Sharing, our K-12 Arts Education Program.

Caleb Teicher is a leader in musically-driven dance and interdisciplinary collaboration.

Their work in concert dance and music has played some of the most prestigious venues in North America and they’re the only dancer to be presented on NPR’s Tiny Desk Concert series.

One of Dance Magazine’s “25 to Watch,” Nic Gareiss (he/they) is widely recognized for his singular voice in the realm of dance, music and the traditional arts. Gareiss’ work draws from many percussive dance practices to weave together a technique facilitating his love of improvisation; clog, flatfoot, and step dance vocabulary; and musical collaboration. He has concertized in seventeen countries with many of the luminaries of roots music and folk dance.
