Blue Hour and Beckoning, a double bill of dance works by Cloud Gate's CHENG Tsung-lung.
“Emotionally charged and deeply poetic.” — Taipei Times
A double bill of two foundational works by Artistic Director CHENG Tsung-lung, Cloud Gate’s Blue Hour and Beckoning mark a shift in CHENG’s artistry, from quiet self-reflection to movement inspired by Taiwanese temple processions.
Derived from the French phrase l'heure bleue, Blue Hour refers to the fleeting moment when day and night blur into one another. Inspired by a vision of the hazy blue sky glimpsed in the predawn darkness of New York, CHENG brings this liminal experience to life in a haunting meditation on the weight of solitude.
The evening concludes with Beckoning, an internationally acclaimed work noted for its playful yet poetic interpretation of the Taiwanese street-dancing ritual of the Eight Infernal Generals. A meditation on the ever-evolving transformation of humanity, CHENG’s choreography unfolds in a mysterious zigzag of body language.
Cloud Gate Dance Theatre of Taiwan will also present a free matinee performance for public school groups through Design for Sharing, our K-12 Arts Education Program.
This tour is made possible in part by the grants from the Ministry of Culture, R.O.C. (Taiwan).

Cloud Gate is the name of the oldest known dance in China. In 1973, choreographer LIN Hwai-min adopted this classical name and founded the first contemporary dance company in the greater Chinese-speaking community. In 2020, CHENG Tsung-lung succeeded LIN as the company’s Artistic Director, bringing together his creative works with traditional roots and excitingly innovative perspectives from the digital and globalized world. In 2023, Cloud Gate celebrated its 50th anniversary.
Cloud Gate dancers receive training in meditation; Qi Gong, an ancient breathing exercise; internal martial arts; modern dance; and ballet. Under the leadership of CHENG, the training has expanded to more dancing styles, such as street dance. Manifesting in choreographies, the company transforms ancient aesthetics into a thrilling and modern celebration of motion.
Cloud Gate has toured worldwide with frequent engagements at the Next Wave Festival in New York, the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in London, the Moscow Chekhov International Theatre Festival in Russia, the Movimentos International Dance Festival, and the Internationales Tanzfest NRW directed by the late Pina Bausch in Germany.
International press has acclaimed the company as “Asia’s leading contemporary dance theater” (The Times), and “One of the best dance companies in the world” (FAZ).
