“By creating a piece revolving around tap dance and interweaving the show with music, visuals and film, Alexander is pushing the boundaries of art and adopting a highly encouraged modern lens.” – David Roussève in an interview with Daily Bruin
We Cool is an autobiographical coming-of-age story, a childhood diary brought vividly to life. Guided by an “inner committee” of childhood companions — O.T. Bear, Murray Huggy-Bear and Marcus Bearison — the work traces the rhythms of growing up through memory, imagination and play.
This interdisciplinary solo performance is driven by rhythm, expressed through tap dance and an amalgamation of movement styles, original musical compositions, organic hand puppetry, spoken text and song. Rhythm becomes a powerful emotional language here, shifting from silly simplicity to layered, serious complexity.
We Cool makes peace with the past while envisioning a future shaped by imagination — one that encourages the pursuit of our deepest desires. The piece imagines a world where individuality is not only accepted but celebrated as part of a collective whole, honoring the unique contribution of each person.
